Choir Director
Steven Altinel holds a ten-year tenure as Choir Director at Walt Whitman High School in Long Island, NY. His career as an educator also includes a five-year tenure as Choir Director at Floral Park Memorial High School. Steven's high school choirs have performed multiple times on the stages of Carnegie Hall and in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center.
Steven grew up inspired to teach and motivated by his own teachers, especially his mentor and lifelong friend, Maria McCumiskey of Plainview Old Bethpage Middle School, who gave him his first opportunity to accompany the school's chorus and discover an invigorating and incomparable sense of purpose.
Steven embraced every opportunity to play, sing, teach, and build close relationships with his students and their families. His passion for music and drive to teach stem from the belief that the work he does together with his students inspires them to discover more about themselves and, ultimately, to grow, flourish, and thrive.

My favorite thing about teaching is building relationships with my students and their families. To think that, somehow, the work we do together helps my students discover more about themselves, and become better for it, is truly one of the greatest feelings.
Teaching Style, Philosophy, and honors
Steven believes learning begins with trust. Every student must believe he can teach them something new. He gets to know the person before the performer. He conducts his classes under the philosophy that dedication and commitment to the craft solidify the student-teacher bond, which empowers optimal learning.
Steven follows the same philosophy at his active voice studio specializing in healthy musical theatre singing, where he coaches students preparing for competitive musical theatre college programs and professional auditions.
One of Steven's highest honors was hosting a reunion concert at Floral Park recognizing his ten years of teaching. Steven proudly welcomed current students from Walt Whitman High School and alumni from Floral Park Memorial High School to perform two numbers featuring a double choir and organ in one truly memorable joint concert. He also welcomed the honor of choral composers commissioning pieces written just for his choir.
